Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron

Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron's work expands in major spatial gestures that explore our current social and urban contexts, which are reflected back to us in tangible experiences happening in the moment of encounter with her work. From a background in architectural studies, she first turned her attention to sculpture and performance, before moving towards installation art, drawing and photography, weaving together her unique approach to space, materials, and the interaction with and within the work. In her most recent exhibition last fall at the FOFA Gallery, she presented a body of work that had transformed and grown to address the specific context we have been living through. The show LACUNA - LACUNE inhabited all the spaces of the gallery, which was comprised of a body of photographic works and two new site-specific installations. The artist's focus on an embodied and contemplative encounter resonates with the overwhelming feeling and sense of vulnerability of our current time. She reflects on the precarity of our relationship with the spaces we inhabit. As described by the gallery director, Nicole Burisch, "through her strategic uses of proximity and distance, she draws us into a heightened experience of what surrounds us - one that oscillates between beauty and destruction, movement and constraints." In an increasingly digital world, Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron's work brings back an essential part of what it means to be human, to feel the presence of our body in relation to its physical and emotional boundaries, to others and to the world around us.

The Montreal-based artist is the 2017 recipient of the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art. She completed her MFA in Sculpture at Concordia University ('16) and holds a M.A. in Art Education and a BFA in Studio Arts. Abbondanza-Bergeron's installations, photography, drawings, and sculptures have been exhibited in solo and group shows in Canadian cities and abroad in Germany, UK, Belgium, Mexico and the United-States.
