As a multidisciplinary visual artist, Alexey explores different facets of queer identities and migration: conflicts between personal and collective memories, formation and evolution of hybrid identities and the emotional side of belonging to a marginalized community. He investigates these themes using personal and found archives consisting of objects, sketches, drawings and interviews with immigrants, queers and artists. Fascinated by how centuries-old methods of imagemaking adapt to the needs of contemporary society, in his projects Alexey examines the interplay between traditional printing techniques – woodcut, intaglio, lithography – and new technologies – laser engraving, scanning and computer-generated graphics. He focuses on the unorthodox application of print media: alternative ways of editioning, the use of 2D prints to create 3D installations and relief transfer on surfaces such as clay or plaster. Alexey works in figurative style, mixing drawing from imagination with academic renderings – creating a visual language with its own gravity, language and rules.
