Alejandra Zamudio Diaz has worked in ceramics, print media, textile and painting, yet her heart has always been rooted in drawing. In recent years she has continued working on paper, in both small and large formats, and have plunged into the world of comics and self-publishing. Through a daily drawing practice that teaches her how to see and read the world, she aims to capture the emotional depth of a fully lived life. To do so, she taps into the symbolic language of dreams, childhood and lullabies, that like blood, moves and animates us in mysterious ways. The change of seasons, the menstrual cycle, plant life, umbilical cords, her dog, and the mother/daughter bond are central themes in her ever-expanding kingdom. In a playful way, through humor, collage, color and cartoon characters the artist creates whimsical worlds where women are active creators of meaning moved by our own deep desires.
Alejandra Zamudio is a Colombian artist currently based in Montreal. Her practice focuses on drawing through which she creates large scale drawings and publications. Through personal symbols, Zamudio creates narrative works that reveal the transcendental in everyday moments. She graduated from Concordia University in 2019 and has since then attended the arts residency Arqueotopia (2019). In 2021, she started the ongoing periodical Creadoras: women artists zine with contributions from local and international artists. The second volume of the publication will be published this year.
